Interesting Facts

Portrait of Lawrence Tenney Stevens by celebrated muralist Thomas Loftin Johnson (1900-1963).

Stevens was a Fellow at the American Academy in Rome, and Johnson was a student at the Academie Julian in Paris. The two met and became good friends. Along with Grant (American Gothic) Wood, and two other friends, they traveled together throughout Italy. They referred to themselves as “The Bunch.”

Like Stevens had earlier, Johnson accepted a Fellowship to live for one month at the Tiffany Foundation at Oyster Bay, New York (part of August and September of 1924).

One of Johnson’s most acclaimed murals is of the Panorama of U.S. Military History at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York.
